When secrets cause untenable turmoil, when will the guilt end?
Mr. Darcy owes a special debt to Mr. Wickham for saving his life, a situation he keeps to himself. In the meantime, Wickham carries on with his dissolute ways, and Darcy, obsessed with his personal obligation, gives him funds regularly—yet he hasn’t one good word to say about the man.
In Hertfordshire, when Darcy finds out that Wickham has joined the local militia, he and Mr. Bingley warn the ladies about his dissolute ways. Darcy gains a friend in Miss Elizabeth, who chases Mr. Wickham off when she first meets him in person.
But Darcy has decided that since his sister’s near elopement, he won’t support Wickham’s debts any longer. When Wickham tells Elizabeth that if Darcy doesn’t pay up, Wickham will have Darcy hurt, she’s convinced Mr. Wickham is unhinged. Darcy and Elizabeth have become friends, but she’s hesitant to show him her true feelings due to the disparity in their stations.
During yet another confrontation with Wickham, he makes some statements to Elizabeth that cause her to figure out several of Mr. Darcy’s secrets—and more. Elizabeth and Darcy must work together to stop Wickham, who seems to be deranged.
