Mrs Jane Bingley (formerly the loveliest Miss Bennet, now married to Charles Bingley and living in splendour near Pemberley) has three sons and two daughters. The elder daughter, Liza, is like herself as a young woman – beautiful, calm, a little reserved. The younger is, in almost every respect, the opposite. Scowling, rebellious, tomboyish Helen Bingley may amuse her father with her antics, but she is the despair of her mother. Spoilt and wilful, she takes her good fortune for granted and resents the expectations of society that threaten to curtail her freedom.
Fate, however, has many lessons in store for our anti-heroine as she grows up. Her new French governess has a secret that threatens to entangle Helen and many others whom she loves in its tentacles. And Liza’s fiancé, the astonishingly handsome Lord Estragor, may not be all he seems.
Helen will have to use all the wit, resource and courage she possesses to ensure that good prevails. She must become heroic. Does she have it in her?
Will history be changed – or will there be a terrible tragedy?
