Fitzwilliam Darcy
From Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
- Brooding and inscrutable gentleman who hides deep passions
- A man who gives his heart fully and steadfastly
- A person who is willing to move beyond closely held precepts to do what is right
- He eats humble pie in order to deserve the girl
As an illustrator, I have some tools at my hands to try and show who Fitzwilliam Darcy is in my imagination as I read him in his many incarnations. Most times, I'm tasked with trying to make somebody else's Darcy vision into reality. Sometimes my vision and theirs comes close. The inset above is one such example.
When I'm reading, I don't always clearly see Darcy's whole face. It fades in and out of clarity, but his eyes and hair are always defined with his serious and unapologetic stare, a defined peak in his bold eyebrows, and a wavy abundance of dark hair which is never quite tamed to perfection. Aiden Turner comes close to that vision. And he looks good in a cravat.
Which other Darcy did people prefer?
The answer will be revealed in tomorrow's post.

Oh yes! Aidan Turner definitely has “the look” !

It’s all about “the look” and what it does to a girl. 😛 -Z

Yes he does have the brooding look in this lovely photo and he would be an acceptable alternative if for some reason Colin, Matthew and Richard Armitage were unavailable. So thank you for sharing. (Although as Darcy I certainly hope he wouldn’t cheat on Elizabeth like Poldark cheated on Demelza!)
I can’t wait to see number 12 😍

I’d like to see that line-up, but my head might just explode. We know Darcy would never do that to Elizabeth, which is part of why 200 years on we still fall for this guy. 🙂 -Z

This photo of Aiden Turner is a perfect Darcy, and I can see the upper face match with Catherine Lodge’s Darcy from “Fair Stands the Wind.”
Once I read a thing about the perfect handsome man that was made up of parts from different movie stars. It had one fellow’s eyes, one’s nose, etc., etc. I can’t remember who had what part, but some part (eyes or nose?) came from Tom Cruise. For Darcy, this hair or Colin’s Darcy hair is perfect, too.
Zorylee, you are truly gifted with graphic design to put images together and come up with Captain Darcy.

With Aiden Turner, there’s no need to mash-up parts. 😉 -Z

Yum! Aidan Turner is gorgeous and I love him as Poldark, but he’s not quite Darcy to me. Too impulsive, reckless, and then there’s that unfaithful bit. Of course, I’m talking about Poldark’s character, not the actor’s. If Colin Firth had never played Darcy, and Turner never been Poldark, Turner would certainly be in the running.

I saw Aiden in the Hobbit first, so it’s not so hard for me to separate the face from the role. On the other hand, I couldn’t help seeing glimpses of John Thornton in the same movie, having RA in North & South ingrained in my head. 🙂 -Z

Good choice, Zorylee! I do like Aidan Turner’s looks and acting. He has brooding down pretty good too! 🙂

There’s a challenge to a brooding, handsome guy–like he’s daring you to turn his mood to “heartfelt delight.” 😉 -Z
